Blue Mountains- Katoomba, Australia
The Blue Mountains of Katoomba, Australia are both scenic and mystical due to the blue hue of the mountain ranges. Having recently arrived in Sydney, this would be the first excursion outside the city I would go to and I was eager to get outdoors to explore! I vaguely knew that the Blue Mountains contain iconic sights such as Three Sisters and Wentworth Falls, however I could not have prepared for all the treasures awaiting in this spectacular range.
I was curious why the color appeared that way so I investigated and learned a few interesting facts worth sharing. According to the official Blue Mountains site, “The Blue Mountains are densely populated by oil bearing Eucalyptus trees. The atmosphere is filled with finely dispersed droplets of oil, which, in combination with dust particles and water vapour, scatter short-wave length rays of light which are predominantly blue in colour.”
What sort of style of adventuring do you enjoy? The Blue Mountains have an array of fun activities to satisfy every outdoor enthusiast. There are guided tours for visitors to see the hidden gems of the forest floor and spots only locals know how to find. If you prefer to trek on your own as I do, there are plenty of bushwalking tracks to hike through and wander through the trees. You can catch views of Australian wildlife from a skyrail car high above the treetops or abseil down the canyon walls!
Depending on the season you can enjoy camping outside or catch unique wild life like glow worms! With all of the many options to take advantage of, it is recommended to spend at least two days here if not longer. Having spent close to two full days here I would have definitely preferred to stay at least a few days longer.
Planning A Visit
The Blue Mountains are quite vast so its safest to plan a hiking route in advance to be sure you have enough time. Keep in mind the weather that accompanies natural rainforests. Dress accordingly and make sure you’re prepared for whatever weather may come. Be sure to pack lots of water as always and snacks along the way. There are several natural waterfalls so if you care for a refreshing dip, be sure to pack swimmers and a towel too! Certain attractions can book out so be prepared and ensure tickets are purchased in advance.
Just outside the beautiful Blue Mountains is the quaint town of Katoomba where you will find cute family-owned restaurants and shopping. You can search for many activities outside the mountains if you’re keen for doing something indoors. Katoomba is just a 1 hour’s drive from Sydney by car or less than 4 hours by bus.
